Gents:

My 46FX threw the back end of its muffler in the corn tonight.  Anybody have one in their "box o' parts?"

The muffler is an O.S. #873.  I'd be happy to either have a whole new muffler, or just the back end.

Thanks.

johnhefley@comcast.net is the best way to reach me.

Funny

Funny enough, my pal Ken F. had a brand new front section still in the original packaging because this thing apparently jettisoned one before (I bought the plane from him, and so naturally I'm blaming him :-)).

Anyhoo, note to self:  When I get a new muffler (or aft half), glue it all together with JB Weld.  It won't come off then!

Thanks for checking.

Sorry I'm missing the fun fly.   I'm in Hong Kong at the moment which is WAY LESS FUN than you guys are having at the field.  If it weren't for the fact that my employer pays me for this foolishness, I'd quit my job.

Found one on EBay

Found the muffler I needed on EBay.  Not cheap, but only 2/3 what I would've paid from Tower.

Sweet, Now when you get it,

Sweet, Now when you get it, use the Red Loctite on the bolt that holds it on... Or Blue if your not feeling so confident.

Isn't red for the heat applications?

Well heres the breakdown on

Well heres the breakdown on loctite.

Loctite® Threadlocker Red 271™ is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It protects threads from rust and corrosion and prevents loosening from shock and vibration. It is only removable once cured by heating up parts to 500°F (260°C).

There is also a version of red that is specifically "High Temperature" but that one is only good up to 450°F so not really sure the difference.

Loctite® Threadlocker Green 290™ is designed for the locking and sealing of threaded fasteners. Due to it's low viscosity and capillary action, the product wicks between engaged threads and eliminates the need to disassemble prior to application. Loctite® Threadlocker Green 290™ cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It prevents loosening from shock and vibration and leakage from shock and vibration and protects threads from rust and corrosion. The product can also be used to fill porosity in welds, casting and powder metal parts. Localized heating and hand tools are needed for disassembly.

Loctite® Threadlocker Blue 242® is designed for the locking and sealing of threaded fasteners which require normal disassembly with standard hand tools. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It protects threads from rust and corrosion and prevents loosening from shock and vibration. Loctite® Threadlocker Blue 242® is particularly suited for applications on less active substrates such as stainless steel and plated surfaces, where disassembly is required for servicing.

Loctite® Purple Threadlocker 222™ (Automotive Aftermarket Only) is a low strength, purple threadlocker designed for fasteners under 1/4" (6 mm) that require occasional adjustment. Removable with hand tools for easy disassembly. Non-corrosive.

LOCTITE® Pink Threadlocker 222MS™ is designed for the locking and sealing of threaded fasteners which require easy disassembly with standard hand tools. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces and prevents loosening and leakage from shock and vibration. Particularly suitable for applications such as adjustment of set screws, small diameter or long engagement length fasteners, where easy disassembly is required without shearing the screw. The thixotropic nature of LOCTITE® 222MS™ reduces the migration of liquid product after application to the substrate.

They also make a loctite Primer called LOCTITE® 7649™, it is used where increased cure speed of LOCTITE® anaerobic products is required. It is especially recommended for applications with passive metals or inert surfaces and with large bond gaps. LOCTITE® 7649™ is particularly recommended when prevailing temperature is low.

Locktite does not work well

Locktite does not work well with heat, (heat loosens it).  The normal used items are red and blue, red is stronger, and not recommended for small threads, as you can break them trying to loosen them.  On large threads, use sparingly as you may need a LOT of heat to loosen.

Gents:

Thanks for the suggestions (which were actually after the fact).  I used the blue stuff both on the threaded part of the muffler as well as the nut on the back.  I've had very good luck with the blue stuff, but I don't remember using it on heated parts.

I went to the field today for a (very tiny) bit of flying.  It was pretty windy, so after the first successful landing, I packed up my stuff.

I finally got that 46FX tuned and running quite nicely (and continuously, which is probably more important).  With any luck, I'll get out tomorrow for a bit more (than the 5 or 6 minutes I enjoyed today).
