President's Message

President's Message Feb. 2010,
Hello fellow radio control enthusiasts. By the time you read this Ground Hogs Day will have come and gone. I would love to believe that we have only 4 weeks of winter left, but in reality I'd be happy enough to see it done and gone in "just" 6 weeks. So here's hoping that spring is just around the corner and the rest of you woodchucks can get a good chuckle as you're prepping for yet another season, sugaring, and are looking forward to some fresh sugar on your snow. Yeah, I know, spring comes in April for Vermont and that's not always a guarantee.

At the next meeting, I'll have more info on how things are looking for the upcoming Chili fun fly. If you're coming, please remember to let our host, Ken Mann, know that you'll be there. This year we need someone to make the chili, any volunteers? Also if you're coming, bring something for the luncheon to share. Last years Chili FF was really great. The weather was spectacular, Ken's shop was warm and spacious and full of the usual banter and conversion about our favorite subject. I got in lots of flying and even maidened one of John's planes for him. It's always an exciting time, hope you're interested and plan to come. The Chili fun fly is Sat., Feb. 13th and starts around 10am. Check the website calendar for directions and some hints n' tips on what to bring for winter flying. Googles, ice crimps, WARM clothes, and if bringing glow planes some lighter fluid really helps. So OK, that's all the tips I have so far on the website but you'll have to check the site for the directions or ask someone where it is. (Update - Matt has added some more important tips to the calendar entry, check them out)

As a reminder, in order to fly at any RC club event, you need to have your 2010 AMA registration completed!!! I've looked up all of you on the AMA site and see that there are several members who have not done so yet. No slacking allowed, get'er dun. I'll be keeping track, it's a mandatory requirement for all members. Also many have paid up their GMRC dues last month , thank you. Your GMRC dues are expected between Jan through March. please try to meet that deadline so our treasurer can complete all the paperwork during the slow part of the year and not during the good months.  Really appreciate your attention to this detail. Also a reminder (again),  we have added a one time $10 road improvement fee to this year's enrollment. What good is having a nice place to fly if you can't get there.

I've been to all 3 of the indoor fun flies that the Barre club (Vermont Modelers) has held this month. I'm having a blast and trying to not crash. Still working on the latter, but getting better and as a first for me, have been doing some rolling harriers in a circle around the gym. Just awesome. Plenty of adrenline to go around and I'm not bored at all with these SLOW planes. So that's one extreme of what's going on at the indoor events. Not to worry, there's everything else in between all the way from Vapors doing 1/2 mph to small 3D foamies and scale planes looking like they're going to bounce off the walls.  Oh that's right, it's just me bouncing off the walls. Loads of fun and staying WARM while doing it. I've got a few videos up on the website to show the action. Also these events haven't been crowded at all, so plenty of flying time for all. The calendar for the VMC events this month are
February 7     Meeting & Fun Fly     Central Vermont Academy - Berlin
February 17    Fun Fly               National Guard Armory - Northfield
February 21    Fun Fly               Central Vermont Academy - Berlin

Many thanks to Mark Berardo and Matt Reed for organizing the contest plane and parts purchases this month. I think the count is somewhere around 18-19 planes purchased so far. I know some aren't planning on being in the contest this year but that still leaves 15-16 that are. It's shaping up to be another splendid (did I say "splendid"???, I should say AWESOME !!!!)  contest this year. Still plenty of time to get in on the expected carnage and bragging rights. The contest starts in June. Come join the fun, contest events will be on Wednesday nights again this year.

This months meeting will be at Steve Pakulski's house in Underhill on Wed., Feb. 3rd.. See the website for directions. Starting time is 7pm as usual

Hope you can join us.
Your Pres.,
Al

Dues are Due

Don't forget to pay your dues before March.  Our new treasurer Fred will be available at the meeting, his contact information is above.  This year, we've voted on a $10 road improvement fee for each member, this applies only to this year.  Remember, we've haven't raised our dues in many, many years!  Thank you for your generosity.

Contact Fred Towler at 879-7271 for more information, or come to the meeting.  These dues cover this newsletter (if anyone needs a hardcopy), flyers for local hobby shops, the club web site, maintenance on the field, and the mower, fun fly prizes, food at the fun flys, etc.  Dues are $36 for Regular members, $24 for Seniors, $12 for Junior (under 18) members, and $12 for non-flying Associates (those interested in the hobby and want to support the club activities).

Monokote Covering

This Wednesday I'll be bringing some examples and showing techniques for monokote covering.  My focus will be on decorative covering and ways to build symmetrical designs that are bubble free.  Now, many of you are experts on working covering this way and I want you to pipe up if you have a trick or if I mis-speak about a technique.  In any case, you should all enjoy some of the items, tools, and tricks I bring to the meeting.

Pictures

Here's a few pictures from the January meeting.  Thanks to every one for bringing there new toys and to Tony for showing some more details about the contest flying wing.
